Sleep wars

Daily writing prompt
Are you more of a night or morning person?

Darn, I missed my Friday post! I was supposed to write it after I got home from my Friday evening outing (will be in my bonus post..). But I went to bed to read. So I dropped the NaBloPoMo ball for the first time I’ve ever participated. I won’t beat myself up over it – after all, kindness starts at home.

So in answer to the prompt – I am likely more of a morning person. Who likes to stay up late at night. Herein lies the problem. Lack of sleep.

I am a morning person, but an extroverted introvert at parties. I’m usually the last to leave a good party too. I like watching late night TV. I will read late into the night. My husband is definitely NOT a morning person, and is usually the first to bed.

On the flip side, I find the quiet mornings are a time for me to reflect, before any movement in the house, to relax a bit and plan before the day gets going. I sit with my coffee, do some DuoLingo, watch some early morning television (Breakfast Television, which gives me a positive boost – and was where we discovered the play that I will write about in the next post). And get on my other screen(s). Occasionally blog like today.

We both wear FitBits and for a time there was a friendly rivalry. Until it became not so friendly. I once got a sleep score of 80 (good) after 5 hours of sleep. So an honours grade!! My husband in comparison, would get a sleep score of 70 after almost 9 hours of sleep. Passable. I am just so efficient, what can I say? My body clock won’t let me sleep past 7 am most days – if I wake up at 8:30 I have really slept in! Even if I go to bed at 1 am.

In response to my rocking sleep scores, my husband would loving say “B*tch” – haha. For the sake of our marriage, we stopped comparing scores. Don’t worry we’ve been together for almost 40 years, married for 32, we’re in it for the long haul.

But how much sleep does one really need? I know there are studies that show optimum sleep is 7 – 8 for someone my age. I’ve borrowed books about sleep, as if I can do something about it. I suppose I can – but is stressing about the lack of the perfect amount of sleep worth it? For the last couple of years I feel lucky if I get more than 6 hours. I feel refreshed enough. It must be my normal.

So what’s on my agenda today? Double up on the blog posts (this is THE last day so catching up is ok); do some shopping for a Chinese hot pot dinner we’re hosting tonight, so some decluttering to prep for upcoming reno, drop off some donations – and enjoy having all the kids home tonight (including bonus kid, my son’s GF!)

An early riser here. Think 4:30-5AM. I need that hour before the kids (4 and 7) wake up, my gentle heart cannot handle all the noise when I first wake up. I am in bed by 9 the absolute latest. My husband lovingly calls me an old lady, since I go to bed so early but I am a zombie if I don’t

Oh, I am definitely a morning person, I don’t mind getting up at a regular time, but hate staying up past what is my bedtime. I can’t do it anymore I’m such an early bird.

Don’t beat yourself up, you did so amazingly well for NaBloPoMo. Yay.

I am definitely a morning person. I mean, I won’t wake up by myself at 5 am and jump out of bed, but I do enjoy early mornings and getting stuff (workouts) done early, so I will gladly set my alarm to enjoy these early morning hours.

I’m just: congratulations on surviving the NaBloPoMo thing in one piece, haha. And you’ve succeeded before so you already knew you could do it. I think that is great!

I’m not a morning person but always wish I was, it’s more socially acceptable, isn’t it?

    cheers.

It sounds like you are both a morning person and a late night person, if you stay up AND get up. My husband’s perfect world would likely be to go to bed at 12 or 1, get up at 9 or 10. He’s been this way the entire time I’ve known him. I’ve switched, and I do better now if I get up early. I’m lucky if I can sleep until 7, but usually it’s more like 5:30. So then my bed time is best at about 9:30 or 10:00. I love the quiet time in the morning, and my family is all adults and I have no responsibility for them…but I still love my quiet morning before anyone else is up.

This is tough for me to pick. I prefer to stay up late, get done as much as I can, and then sleep late. BUT – that is rarely the case. I did stay up till 12 or 12:30 over Thanksgiving break (while I had college kids home) and then I slept until 8 or almost 8. At the same time, I do like getting up and being done with my workout and my shower before I need to start my daycare. I guess when college kids are around, I like staying up late, so I can maximize my time with them but when I have to work – I wanna get up early and be prepared for the day. If that makes sense.

Good job on NaBloPoMo. I enjoyed reading your posts and getting to know you this last month.

  7. I am loving the earlish mornings too. I have this eco my self… the husband is a (very) late riser we often do not have breakfast/lunch before 2/3pm on weekends.

But I also rarely go to bed before midnight. And I rarely sleep later than 8. Which would give me a solid 8 hours but it doesn’t with my middle night insomnia. I read a dozen sleep books and can not figure out more sleep even though I need it. It is exhausting because my sleep scores are somewhere between 50-65 with an occasional 80. Not good.

I’m a sun person. I like to be awake when the sun is up. If the sun is not up, I do not think it’s appropriate to be awake. Since the sun is setting at about 4:30pm these days, I am sure you can sympathize with me that it seems like it’s never an appropriate time to be awake. My alarm is set at 5:30am and I try to get to bed by 10:30pm. Yes, I probably should try to get to bed by 9:30, but I just haven’t successfully managed that!
